In October of 2007, Cawaco R&D received a grant from ADEM to restore 1,100 feet of Town Creek, Jasper. The stream showed signs of severe erosion and degraded habitat. With partners including the City of Jasper, AL DOT, Walker County S&WCD, Jennings Environmental and North State Environmental, the stream was restored using natural channel design and a wetland was installed to treat stormwater before entering the Creek. The project was completed in October, 2009.

Prior to construction (May, 2008), Geological Survey of Alabama performed a habitat assessment on Town Creek. The assessment indicated that the creek was in “fair” to “poor” condition as habitat for fish communities. Since then, Geological Survey sampled in 2009, 2010 and 2012. According to Geological Survey (2012), the fish population in Town Creek, “appears stable for an urban watershed … dominated by sunfishes, bass, stonerollers, tolerant minnows, and few darters. Improvements … by the restoration project has had a positive affect on the fish assemblage in Town Creek through creation of deeper plunge pools, in-stream and stream bank vegetation cover, less sediment deposition and improved diversity and quality of riffle and run habitat.”

Tannehill State Park receives over 500,000 visitors a year and is financially supported by park fees. In September, 2010, EPA reduced discharge allowable limits on phosphorus from 4.5ppm to .5ppm; making the current, functioning wastewater treatment facilities in the Park out of compliance with EPA requirements. Costs to bring the facility in compliance were estimated at $600,000.

Cawaco RC&D was informed of the problem by a Clean Water Partnership stakeholder. RC&Ds identify unmet needs their communities and create solutions that work. With a team of resource providers, Cawaco provides facilitation for the team to bring the facility into compliance. An alternative treatment method which utilizes drip irrigation was selected-reducing the costs to $300,000. With the assistance of Sewage Equipment Sales & Services, ADECA Surplus, Tuscaloosa County Commission, Alternative Wastewater Engineering, Cahaba Clean Water Partnership, Alabama Forestry Commission, ACIPCO and TTL, Inc., Cawaco RC&D and Tombigbee RC&D. Through equipment purchased from ADECA’s Surplus, costs have further been reduced to $100,000.

Donations of piping, irrigation, and electrical equipment and labor are currently being sought. If you would like to help with this project, please contact Patti Pennington, Cawaco RC&D at (205) 623-0458.

Hobson City, Alabama, the second oldest African American town in the United States formed a youth community garden club in the spring of 2011 and with the assistance of the Coosa Valley RC&D Council, AT&T of Birmingham, The Towns of Oxford and Hobson City, Tuskegee University and Beshear’s Tractor Company converted an old abandoned school playground into a thriving community garden. The new innovative system of micro-irrigation/plastic culture was used in establishing the garden. A hoop house was added at the site in the spring of 2012. More than 12,000 pounds of produce has been grown on the one-quarter acre site. This project won the” State and National RC&D Award for Youth Involvement”

FAWN takes place in a forest environment, usually one with a half-mile or so round robin hiking trail. Seven or eight learning stations are set up at intervals along this trail and manned by resource professionals. Learning stations usually include forest management, forest products, forest history, soils, wildlife, tree and plant identification, water quality and Project Learning Tree (PLT).

The students, all sixth graders from the local school system, are divided into seven or eight groups matching the number of learning stations. They are usually in classroom units of 25 or 30 students per group. Each group is given a different colored tee shirt with the FAWN logo to keep them distinct. They then move around the trail, stopping at each learning station for 20-25 minutes. Each group is accompanied by a “trail guide” who acts as a timekeeper and teacher’s aide.

The stations provide a positive, hands-on, interactive learning experience for the students. They will feel soil, count tree rings, handle a snake, do several PLT exercises, play learning games and be educated about why they need trees and why management is necessary to keep the products coming while protecting the intrinsic values of the forest.

They will learn to see the forest differently, not only as a beautiful place full of trees where animals live, but as an integral part of their everyday lives. In addition, the teachers are given resource materials and names of people they can call on to continue their education about important environmental issues. This will reinforce the message the students receive at FAWN. Through pre-testing and post-testing methods of approximately 500 students a year we have discovered that the students have gained better knowledge of forestry and their environment after attending FAWN.

Funds for much needed projects at Ranburne Elementary School were furnished in the form of a $1000 grant by Coosa Valley RC&D Council. A total of 345 students in grades K – 4th, were taught “Good Touch, Bad Touch”, and Anti-Bullying” with resources and workbooks purchased with grant money. With today’s news headlines, children need to know the difference between a “Good Touch, Bad Touch” and how to say no. They need to know what to do if touched in a bad way, they need to know how to tell someone and not feel they did something to deserve it. Also, children need to know how their words and actions can affect others in a negative way. Children need to understand it is not funny to say things which can hurt people’s feelings. Education on these topics can bring children to talk and ask questions which will help to get things out in the open.

Soil erosion on the entry road, parking lot and boat ramp at Watershed Site 3 has been a constant problem for the City of Ashland. Watershed Site Number 3 is the source of municipal water for the cities of Ashland and Lineville. The structure is one of more than 106 watershed structures that were constructed by the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service more than 40 years ago throughout the state for flood prevention and erosion control. SIFAT and City of Ashland Maintenance Dept. donated 271 hours of volunteer time. The check presentation was held at the Coosa Valley RC&D Annual Meeting.
